Community Cohesion
Roscoe Primary School is situated within a country which is diverse in terms of culture, faith, ethnicity and social backgrounds. Our local area, however, is less diverse and it is our responsibility to ensure that our pupils understand and celebrate differences and similarities and develop tolerance. We believe that community cohesion means that everyone is working towards an equitable society, in which there is a common vision, a sense of belonging and all people have similar life chances.
We promote the spiritual, moral, social, cultural, mental and physical development of our pupils, to prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.
Our school celebrates the diversity within our area and welcomes the contributions made by different groups and individuals to the community. Community cohesion links many aspects of everyday life at our school and we work positively towards the inclusion of all pupils.
Our Community Cohesion Aims
· All pupils are equally valued and treated with respect and fairness.
· All pupils are provided with opportunities to experience, understand and celebrate diversity.
· We work towards eliminating all discrimination.
· We believe that all pupils, employees, stakeholders and members of our local and global community should be treated with dignity and respect at all times and we do not tolerate bullying, harassment or victimisation of any groups or individuals.
· We value the health, well-being and cohesion of our local community.
We uphold these aims in the following four areas:
· the school community
· the community within which the school is located
· the UK community
· the global community
Examples of our community cohesion initiatives are demonstrated in:
Teaching and learning
· Our curriculum supports high attainment, promotes common values, and builds pupils' understanding of the diversity that surrounds them.
· Curriculum based activities enrich pupils' understanding of community and diversity through visits, visitors and meetings with members of different communities, eg. visits to places of worship and religious leaders, theatre groups, sports groups - to name a few!
· Lessons across the curriculum promote common values and help pupils to value differences and challenge prejudice and stereotyping –PSHE/SEAL/ Citizenship and Religious Education.
Equity and excellence
· Differentiated planning supports the variety of individual learning needs.
· The school tracking systems enable us to evaluate progress of all groups and to tackle underperformance.
· There are strategies in place to deal with incidents of prejudice, bullying and harassment.
· The School Council has a high profile - an election process is held in the Autumn Term.
· A wide range of extra-curricular activities are on offer for all children.
